Total Reduced Sulfur - TRS

Total reduced sulfur (TRS) is the sum of the following malodorous sulfur compounds:

  • Hydrogen sulfide, chemical formula H2S
  • Methyl mercaptan, also known as methanethiol, short form MM, chemical formula CH3SH
  • Dimethylsulfide, short form DMS, chemical formula CH3SCH3 or (CH3)2S
  • Dimethyl disulfide, short form DMDS, chemical formula CH3SSCH3

The TRS compounds are generated for example at pulp production but also naturally when organic matter decays. The concentration is expressed as sulfur. All components are flammable and carries a strong and repulsive smell also in very low concentrations. They are highly toxic in high concentrations.
