Dioxins and Carbon Dioxide samplers

Long-term sampling of dioxins, furans, dioxin-like PCBs, and carbon dioxide

Even in very low concentrations, dioxins are some of the world's most toxic substances. They are formed in combustion processes, especially in waste incineration. Emissions of dioxins from waste-to-energy plants are therefore strictly regulated. However, the concentrations are low and in order to measure them, a sample of the flue gas must first be collected. This is done with a sampler. In the OPSIS version, the same product can also be supplemented with carbon dioxide sampling.

A ROBUST TOOL FOR EMISSIONs MONITORING OF DIOXINS

The OPSIS DX100 system is basically a sampler for dioxins (PCDD), furans (PCDF), and dioxin-like PCBs, simplified to just 'dioxins'. The usually low dioxin levels mean that real-time monitoring of the levels is not possible. Instead, long-term sampling of the flue gas is done, where the sample is accumulated in an absorbent in a container. After the sampling period, the container is sent to an external laboratory for analysis of the dioxins content.

Sampling the flue gas can be a challenge. It must take place isokinetically, which places great demands on control and measurement of the sampling volume. At the same time, the equipment must be able to handle the often aggressive, dust-filled, and wet flue gases. Thanks to the robust design and proven technology of other OPSIS gas sampling products, the OPSIS DX100 system can handle these challenges.

The system meets the requirements for sampling according to the European standard EN 1948 and is thus well suited for sampling according to the EU's WI-BATC rules.

EXTEND TO CO2 SAMPLING FOR FUEL ANALYSIS

The DX100 system can be fitted with a flow proportional carbon dioxide (CO2) sampler, compliant with sampling under the European standard EN 13833. It is of particular interest for waste-to-energy plants that use mixed fuel where part is biogenic and part is fossil. By analysing the carbon-14 content in the sample, the proportion of biogenic CO2 can be determined. Emission rights or tax for fossil CO2 emissions then only need to be paid for the CO2 that really originates in the fossil fuel. The savings compared to having to buy extra allowances or pay a higher flat tax based on an assumed fossil fuel share can provide a quick payback on the investment in a DX100 sampler with CO2 option.

CO2 SAMPLING only

The sampling system is also available in a variant for CO2 sampling only called CO200. Function and appearance are similar to the DX100, but the CO200 is equipped only with a flow-proportional sampler for CO2. CO200 can subsequently be expanded to a complete DX100 system, which then also includes isokinetic sampling of dioxins.
